Charles Barkley: ‘I’m a fat old dude’ and can outplay Tristan Thompson in NBA Finals
Tristan Thompson’s poor play is a big reason why the Cavaliers find themselves down 3-0 to the Warriors in the NBA Finals. The 6-9 big man has been abysmal, going scoreless in two of the three games while averaging just 3.7 rebounds.
His performance is a major step down from what he did in last year’s Finals when he averaged a double-double (10.3 pts, 10.1 reb). Thompson has received worthy criticism from plenty of critics, but Charles Barkley had perhaps one of the more creative after Game 3 Wednesday night.
“[Thompson] scored the same amount of points as me and Shaq. And had three whole rebounds,” Barkley stated. “Let me tell you something, I’m a fat old dude. If they put me in a NBA game right now for 20 minutes, I could get three rebounds.”
Could the 54-year-old Barkley really get three rebounds? He earned the nickname “The Round Mound of Rebound” during his playing days, but it’s hard to imagine him actually going out and doing that now. But that’s besides the point.
Barkley was just bringing home the point that Thompson has been awful. Stephen Curry had more rebounds in Game 3 (13) than Thompson has in the entire series (11).
The Cavs gave Thompson a large contract before last season, and appeared to be worth it at the time. But he’s not living up to expectations in this series, and his performance may have the Cavs thinking about what they want to do with the cap space he’s currently taking up.
